Tiler Invoicing Tips

  • 1Quote per square metre for straightforward jobs and fixed price for bathrooms — clients prefer knowing the total upfront.
  • 2Separate materials from labour on the invoice so clients can see exactly what they're paying for.
  • 3Add a line for wastage (typically 10–15% extra tiles) so clients understand why you ordered more than the measured area.
  • 4Take a deposit of 30–50% before starting, especially when you're purchasing tiles on the client's behalf.
  • 5Photograph completed work before handing over the invoice — it protects you if any disputes arise later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do tilers charge in the UK?

UK tilers typically charge £25–£40 per square metre for floor tiling and £35–£50 per square metre for wall tiling. Day rates range from £150–£250 outside London and £200–£350 in London. Bathroom tiling as a complete job usually costs £500–£1,500 depending on size and complexity.

Should a tiling invoice include materials?

Yes. If you supply the tiles and materials, list them separately with quantities and unit costs. If the client supplied the tiles, note that on the invoice and charge labour only. Either way, include adhesive, grout, trims and prep materials you provided.

Do tilers need to be VAT registered?

You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 per year. Below that threshold it's optional. If VAT registered, show VAT separately on every invoice. Many sole-trader tilers operate below the threshold and don't charge VAT.
