How the discount is calculated

A discount lowers the price you charge before any tax is added. Whether you quote it as a percentage or a flat amount, the maths is the same in two steps: work out how much comes off, then take it away from the original price.

The calculation is:

  • Amount saved = original price × (discount % ÷ 100), or simply the fixed amount off
  • Final price = original price − amount saved
  • With VAT = VAT is charged on the final (discounted) price, then added on top

Applying VAT after the discount is the correct order: the discount reduces the net amount first, and VAT is charged on what the customer actually pays. Everything runs in your browser, so your figures never leave your device.

Discount calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original price for the final price. For example, 20% off £120 is £120 × 0.20 = £24 saved, leaving a final price of £96. This calculator does both steps for you as you type.

How do I work out a fixed-amount discount?

Switch to 'Fixed amount off' and enter the pounds you are taking off. The amount saved is simply that figure, and the final price is the original price minus the discount. It is handy for round-number deals like '£25 off' rather than a percentage.

How do I add VAT to a discounted price?

Tick 'Add VAT to the discounted price' and set your rate (20% is the UK standard rate). The calculator applies VAT to the price after the discount, which is the correct order — the discount reduces the net price first, then VAT is charged on the reduced amount. You will see the net price, the VAT and the gross total.

Should I show the discount on my invoice?

Yes — showing the original price, the discount and the net amount makes your invoice clear and easy for a client to check, and it keeps your records tidy for tax. With 1nvoic3 you can add a discount line to an invoice and bill the discounted amount directly. This tool is a quick calculator, not tax advice.
